It's Monday! What are you reading? ....is a meme sponsored by Sheila at Book Journey. Kellee at Unleashing Readers and Jen at Teach Mentor Texts gave the meme a kidlit twist. It's a great way to share what I'm reading, see what other kidlit lovers are reading, and make reading plans for the upcoming week.
I've been wanting to participate in this weekly post since I found it last year, and am feeling proud that I've finally made time to sit down and do it. I really love seeing what others are reading, and have gotten some great book recommendations as a result.
My reading this week:
Home by Carson Ellis (5/5 stars)
All ages
My students and I adore this picture book. Carson Ellis is a fantastic author/illustrator who adds thoughtful details to each of her illustrations. Each time we read this book, my students notice something new. She came to our school last week and shared all that went into making her book Home. You'll be missing out if you don't experience this beautiful book. It's a work of art!
The Island of Dr. Libris by Chris Grabenstein (4/5 stars)
Grades 3-7
This book will be released on March 24. I was lucky enough to snag an advanced copy recently at nErDcampBellingham (thanks Adam Shaffer). I've been looking forward to reading this one for awhile. Chris Grabenstein is the author of the New York Times bestselling Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library and coauthor of the I Funny series with James Patterson. In this book, Billy is stuck spending his summer at Dr. Libris' lakeside cabin. His mom is holed away writing her dissertation, leaving Billy hours of time alone and bored. He finds the private library of Dr. Libris, and soon discovers that every book he reads comes to life out on the island in the center of the lake. A great read that explores the power of imagination, perseverence, and problem solving.
Listen, Slowly by Thanhha Lai (5/5 stars)
Grades 4-8
This book is beautiful--I zoom through books quickly, but this was an experience I wanted to slow down and savor. 12 year old Mai can't wait to spend her summer vacation at the beach where she lives in California. Instead, she has to accompany her Vietnamese grandmother back to Vietnam to find out what happened to her grandfather years ago during the Vietnam War. Through her journey, Mai discovers the meaning of home and culture, and what it means to be family.
Books I'm currently reading:
Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan
X by Kekla Magoon and Ilyasah Shabazz (on audio)
Egg by Steve Jenkins
Eye to Eye: How Animals See by Steve Jenkins
As a side note, I'm trying to insert photos for each book, but am having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to add more than one image without the whole format going wonky. Weebly, it cannot be this hard. Hoping to have someone help me out this week.
Happy reading this week!
