Social Media plays a very small part in my life, however when I was introduced to Twitter I was an immediate fan. I use Twitter only for learning - not news, not social - but even then it can get a bit overwhelming and I need to take occasional breaks. The hashtag #TMWYK stands for Talking Math With Your Kids, and that's what I'd like to promote in this post.
Every year the UW hosts a wonderful event called The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival. The link will bring you the The Math For Love page with information about this amazing opportunity. This is short notice as it takes place - tomorrow! Hopefully some of you will make it.
The new QAE Math Exploration is ready to go - and will be available for students to work on until Spring Break. This time round the Math Committee decided to focus on Which Would You Rather ....? Again, the key is to be able to explain/prove/defend your choice - mathematically. There are 3 "levels" available, with 2 choices for each. The Peeps are the lower level, the jelly beans are mid-level, and the pizza/shopping are the higher level. Feel free to "explore" along with your student at home as well, and to use the answer sheet that we've also created.

This week I had my Math Club students work on a few Which One Doesn't Belong challenges and a couple of What do you Notice? It's always so much fun hearing their different ideas and watching their ability to explain their thinking grow. Our school has been doing an amazing job this year with pushing our students to really look at and think about math and to feel comfortable with sharing their thoughts. I've noticed a difference in the way I hear kids working during math, the things that they share with me around the school, and their excitement about math! Here are the challenges that we worked on this week in Math Club. Give them a try!
Have fun talking math with your kids this weekend and PLEASE OH PLEASE will you share your experiences with me? I'd LOVE to hear what you did, what you thought, what you chose, etc...
Thanks for all of your support both at home and at QAE and Happy Mathing!
