The Math Committee has implemented a new program this year - QAE Math Explorations. The first one was introduced to the students before the December break and focused on estimation. A group of "Math Ambassadors" put together a video to share in classrooms with tips for how to estimate, and reminders to explain your thinking.
And the trophies went to ... Ms. J's 3rd grade classroom, and Ms. Dickens' 2nd grade classroom -the Primary and Intermediate classes that had the highest number of closest answers WITH explanations. They are the proud hosts of the trophies until this next Exploration is over.
The current Math Exploration is focused on the mathematical conversation of "Which One Doesn't Belong?". Our version involves snowflakes:

What I absolutely love about WODB (which one doesn't belong) is that there is NO wrong answer - you just have to be able to explain your reasoning. They all belong, and they all don't belong.
A second group of Math Ambassadors made a movie for this Exploration as well, but I am unable to post videos on my blog. You can check the video out via my Twitter account (where I found out there was a time limit on videos so there are two parts):
Part One
Part Two
Feel free to share your answers and ideas by replying to this post - Which snowflake do YOU think doesn't belong?
We will announce the Primary and Intermediate classrooms with the most entries (that include explanations and reasoning) at the end of the month.
If you can't get enough of this type of activity, I recommend checking out the following:
The book Which One Doesn't Belong by Christopher Danielson
The website Which One Doesn't Belong? www.wodb.ca
My Math Club Groups participated in a WODB activity posted by 1st grade classroom in Canada. It was a challenge for some to explain their thinking, but eventually they were successful. What I enjoyed was hearing different reasons for the same answers. I also found it interesting that there was one penguin in particular that was predominately chosen over the others. Do you think you know which one that was?
