Happy November!
I'd like to start off by sharing with you some new resources that I have recently discovered. (FYI - These have not yet been added to my games, books, and apps pages.)
BOOKS:
Charlie Piechart and the case of the Missing Pizza Slice
by Eric Comstock and Marily Sadler
This is a fun picture book that marries the excitement of detective work, with the introduction to fractions. Oh, and pizza!

Lifetime: The Amazing Numbers in Animal Lives
by Lola M. Schaefer
This is another picture book and was a gift from my good friend Ms. Cooper. It has beautiful illustrations and is filled with wonderful animal facts like, "In one lifetime, this caribou will grow and shed 10 sets of antlers." A fun and interesting read.
The Rabbit Problem
by Emily Gravett
Every time I did an online search for math related story books, The Rabbit Problem would pop up. Finally my curiosity got the best of me and I bought it. I am so glad I did! The book is in the format of a calendar, with each month bringing us more ... you guessed it, rabbits! The final 2 pages are a wonderful surprise, which I will not spoil here, but definitely make the book!
If you would like to take a look at these new books, or any of the others in my collection, please feel free to stop by my work area in the Tree House. I would love to share!
GAMES:
One of my favorite game companies, Blue Orange, recently came out with a set of games called Super Genius. There's Super Genius Reading 1, Reading 2, First Words, Addition, and Multiplication 1. One thing that I look for in games is adaptability. All of the Super Genius sets have this - meaning there are multiple ways to play the game including varying levels of difficulty. They are games that can grow with your child. Not to mention the fact that they come in nice handy little boxes that can travel well!
You are welcome to stop by and check out my game collection, or even play one or two!

APPS:
I am always on the look out for good apps. "Good" meaning there is actual learning happening, it's not too busy, it's easy to use, and represents math in a variety of ways.
* A little a side note here ... I realized the other day that whenever I try out new apps, I always have the sound down. So if you have downloaded an app that I recommended and the audio is totally obnoxious, I do apologize!
The selection below met most, if not all, of my criteria. A few of them are free, or free up to a point, otherwise the prices are between $1.99 and $3.99.
Starting from the top left to the right they are:
Division Flashcard Match, Subtraction Flashcard Match, Numbers and Counting Match, Multiplication Flashcard Quiz Match, Addition Flashcard Quiz Match, Friends of Ten, and Teaching Number Lines.
The first 5 are from a company called Eggroll Games, and the last two are from a company called Little Monkey Apps. I would highly recommend checking them both out. I know for a fact I will be buying some more Little Monkey apps!
OK ... now on to the MATH CHALLENGES:
Today I announced the winners for Math Challenge #3 - there were four of them. My highly trained Choosing Committee and I were SO impressed by the amount of amazing hard work that all of the participants did, that we had to choose a couple of extra winners. I am dead serious about the level of work and effort that went into their answers - completely impressive! I'm thinking that there was some major brain growth happening during these last two weeks! Maybe we should start measuring heads ...
The Primary class winners:
Rani J. from Ms. Shaw's class and Serena B. from Ms. Smith's class
The Intermediate class winners:
Henry B. from Ms. Abshire's class and Mackenzie from Ms. Hunter's class
The Classroom winners: Ms. Meck (that's twice now!) and Ms. Colando!
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone listed above, as well as to all of you who participated.
You are truly amazing!
The new challenge can be found here: Math Challenge #4
It is due on November 13th
Thank you for taking the challenge,
Have fun,
and "Happy Mathing"! Ms. Francisco
