At the beginning of the school year I like to use short rhyming books with my intervention groups that need work on phonological awareness skills. I keep a basket of these books at the ready, and will be adding Rhyming Dust Bunnies this year.
Capstone Publishers gave me this series last weekend at the SLJ (School Library Journal) Summit in Seattle. It's a cute new graphic novel series--ideal for 2nd and 3rd graders.
I couldn't wait to get my hands on Brian Selznick's latest book when it came out last month. The Marvels got so much book love on Twitter from those that were lucky enough to receive an advance copy, and it did not disappoint. If you liked Selznick's previous books, The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck, you will love The Marvels. The first half of the book is told entirely through pictures--or should I say Selznick's gorgeous artwork. The second half is all text, followed by a short section of illustrations at the end. I was drawn into the story immediately, and am finding myself still thinking about the characters. Everthing about the book is gorgeous!!
Katherine Applegate, who brought us The One and Only Ivan, writes special books. This is another gem that received so much book love before it was even released. Crenshaw tackles issues of homelessness, hunger, growing up, and friendship--both imaginary and real. A cherished read--not to be missed!
Happy Monday!
