I spent the last five days soaking up the sun in Phoenix, celebrating my husband's birthday, watching some Mariners spring training games with my family, and squeezing in a few great reads whenever I could. I finished Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan. I loved everything about this book. I loved seeing how the stories of three seemingly unrelated characters, in three different parts of the world, end up intertwined. Beautiful stories with a musical motif throughout. Put it on the top of your TBR pile!! (Grades 4-8) I read Laurie Halse Anderson's The Impossible Knife of Memory next. I've had this one on my TBR pile since I heard Donalyn Miller talk about it last summer at nerdcamp Michigan. A well written Y.A. read that kept me interested until the end. It reminded me that some of our students deal with unimaginable situations of survival at home, that make coming to school and learning a pretty low priority. (Y.A.) On the plane coming back to Seattle, I read the second book of the The Thickety series by J.A. White. The Thickety: The Whispering Trees. I don't normally love fantasy, but I like everything about these books--the cover, the story, the characters. Well worth it! (Grades 4-7) Roller Girl, by Victoria Jamieson is awesome! Fans of Smile and Sisters will love it. I actually learned a lot about the sport of roller derby and was inspired by the main character's determination and perseverance. I think this book is appropriate for grades 4-8 Hope your reading week was filled with great stories. Excited to see what everyone will share!

I've got Echo on my list of books to read. I just love Pam Munoz Ryan's work. I think I picked up Roller Girl at our local graphic novel shop, but I haven't looked in the bag since before spring break. The Thickety looks interesting too.

I read Roller Girl before Spring Break and loved it! So awesome to have female role model that is "unique".
