Grades K-2
A humorous, informational picture book. The author tries to talk herself out of her fear of spiders by presenting interesting facts and details about them. Fun and engaging text and illustrations. A must read for this time of year.
All Ages
Leo is a ghost everyone would want to be friends with. When a new family moves into his house, however, he discovers that he is scaring them. Not knowing what else to do, he moves on to explore the outside world and meets a new friend. He is afraid to tell her he is, in fact, a ghost and not her imaginary friend for fear she will not accept him. A lovely ghost story perfect for a Halloween read.
Grades 1-3
This new transitional chapter book series is perfect for 2nd graders. Piper is a brand new 2nd grader who lives on an island off the coast of Maine. She rides a lobster boat to school every day, always says what's on her mind, and has a fairy tree in her front yard. (The magic tree is discovered in the first book.) Themes of family, community and island life. Love it!
Grades 1-3
This cute new series features Wally, a pup with a nose for adventure. He is determined to join a group of puppy pirates and stows away aboard their ship. When discovered, Wally has to prove he is puppy-pirate material.
Grades 7 and up
This book won the 2012 YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults as well as numerous other awards. I started it Saturday night and couldn't put it down. I am a huge fan of Holly Goldberg Sloan and will be reading the sequel to this one as soon as I can get my hands on it. I love the main theme of the book--how we are all connected in big and small, positive and negative ways.
I still have not started Orbiting Jupiter. I've heard so many people say they've read it all in one sitting, that I want to make sure I have a big chunk of time available. I'm also halfway through the graphic novel Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to the Earth by Judd Winick.
I'm looking forward to finding new books this week by visiting Jen Vincent's web page: www.teachmentortexts.com
Happy reading!
