At the start of this school year, while we were learning more about our student needs, I had the pleasure of being able to spend time in the first grade classrooms once a week. I would read them a book about a math topic and then teach an activity based on the book. I had a blast spending time with the kids and watching them soak up the math that I introduced them to: infinity, math in our world, skip counting, the Möbius strip, etc...
Here are some of the books that I shared with them:

All of these books, and more, are available for you to borrow and are located outside of my room in the Tree House. Be sure to let me know if you are interested!
I also spent some extra time with Ms. Smith's 1st and 2nd graders. Each time I'd visit, one of her students would bring up something that they learned from my last visit. How awesome is that? One of their favorite books that I shared with them is The Rabbit Problem which introduces the Fibonacci Sequence. I love this book myself! After sharing it with them I brought in a book that shows the many ways that the Golden Spiral (the Fibonacci Sequence) can be found in nature - how cool is that?!?!

Lastly I want to share pictures that I have been taking of student work so far this year. Because my Math Specialist job is a half time position, I have only been able to work with 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade this year. See if you can tell which grade level goes with each picture ... here are a couple of hints - there are no pictures of 5th grade work , and only three of 3rd grade. Obviously I need to start representing those two groups a bit more :)
As always, thank you for sharing your children with me and for taking the time to hear about our Math Adventures!
